The Mising cultural association, the Mising Dírbí Kébang (MDK), has taken up a set of agenda as a part of its ambitious assignment to work with a focused approach for development in the cultural realms of the Mising Tani people. The MDK is an apex cultural body of Mising people.

Gumrag as Mising national dance

The MDK is mooting an ambitious action plan to promote Gumrag, the dance perform during Ali-A:ye Lígang (AAL) festival, as national dance of the Mising people. The cultural organization will also work for national recognition of Gumrag dance. Mg. Hem Chandra Doley, general secretary of MDK recently told misingOnline.com the action plan will be carried out under a flagship program named “Ali-A:ye Gumrag!”. The MDK is currently working towards a consensus to develop single drum (dum dum) beat for Gumrag dance. It is said that at present there were variation of Gumrag beat as well as dance in Mising areas. As a part of its action plan, the MDK recently organized a week-long training camp known as Preliminary Master’s Training at Disangmukh in Sivasagar district where number of cultural units (known as bangke in Mising language ) from the district participated. Trainers will be deputed to various Mising inhabited places in order to promote Gumrag with same sway and beats. The training program was materialized with financial assistance from oil major Oil and National Gas Corporation (ONGC) at Disangmukh, a historical place well-known for ethnic Mising culture and literature.
MDK eyes world record for Gumrag
The MDK is also eyeing for scripting record for Gumrag dance initially at Limca Book of World Records by gathering 10,000 drummers and dancers in a convenient time and place after full preparation. A sub-committee has been formed for this ambitious agenda by inducting well-known cultural personalities like Mg. Pabitra Pegu as the chairman, who is also the current vice-president of MDK, Mg. Aswini Kumar Doley as member, the treasurer of MDK, Mg. Suruj Kumar Patiri, the president of MDK, and Mg. Hem Chandra Doley, the general secretary of MDK.
MDK portal coming up soon, mouthpiece ‘Dírbí’ to be revived
Mg. Doley also told MO that a portal with domain name www.misingdirbikebang.org of the organization will hit the cyber space very soon. The organization has already registered the domain name and working on its web contents. The half-yearly mouthpiece of MDK ‘Dírbí’ will be revived, which is now out publication. Mg. Sitaram Doley is unanimously entrusted for revival of the mouthpiece that would carry the messages to people about the activities of the cultural body.
